While Google has firmly established its ads in AI Overviews, the official launch of advertising on ChatGPT in the U. S.1 marks the next major shift in digital marketing.
At LeadEngine, we’ve been at the forefront of this development for our customers from the very beginning.
We are in a phase reminiscent of the gold rush atmosphere of the early Google AdWords years.
Since when have there been ads on ChatGPT?
OpenAI began piloting ads for free and ChatGPT Go users in the US on February 9 , 2026. There is currently no official launch date for ChatGPT Ads in Europe , but it is expected to roll out in 2026.
Initial data from the U.S. shows that these ads appear directly below the answers and are highly context-specific.
The planned advertising on ChatGPT will fundamentally change the way we generate leads. But while many are only eyeing the paid spots, they’re overlooking the huge opportunity to be cited by the AI through relevant content—without paying a dime.

How can you gain visibility in the AI space without running ads on ChatGPT and similar platforms?
Yes, OpenAI is aggressively pushing advertising on ChatGPT. But the real secret to sustainable growth remains:
You don’t have to pay for every click to be recommended by the AI. This used to apply to Google and Google Ads, and it still applies to ChatGPT Ads today.
If your content is optimized for “generative engines,” ChatGPT, Google, and others will cite you organically as an expert source.
This optimization is called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and here at LeadEngine, we’ve been actively and successfully applying it for our clients for months.
AI engines favor content that is classified as "authority-driven." Structured data and expert quotes significantly increase the chances of being cited as a source in organic search results.
Why is GEO the logical extension of SEO?
Traditional search engine optimization (SEO) was designed to rank at the top of a list of blue links. These days, with Google AI Overview, Gemini, ChatGPT, and so on, that’s no longer enough.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the answer to changing user behavior:
- We no longer optimize just for clicks on a website, but for being mentioned within the AI response.
- While SEO lays the foundation (visibility), GEO ensures that the AI understands your content, trusts it, and incorporates it into the chat history as a direct recommendation.

If you’ve mastered SEO, you’ve got the foundation. GEO is the upgrade for the era of conversation.

Is your company already being recommended by AI?
Secure your spot in AI responses—regardless of advertising on ChatGPT and similar platforms. With our GEO strategy, we’ll make you visible in AI.
What can you do right now to prepare for advertising in ChatGPT?
Anyone who wants to prepare for advertising on ChatGPT should first work on their organic AI visibility (GEO).
After all, before brands become visible in AI systems or appear in advertising contexts, the content must first be discoverable, understandable, and trustworthy for ChatGPT.
That aside, there are a few adjustments you can already look into:
1. Optimization for the "SearchGPT" index
- Tip: Check the robots.txt file to see if the OAI SearchBot is allowed. If OpenAI is not permitted to crawl the page, it will not appear in organic search results or as the basis for AI-generated ad recommendations.
- Focus: ChatGPT often provides only 2–3 sources. You need to ensure that the content is accurate enough to be selected as a primary source.
2. "Brand Mentions" as an Ad Trigger
- Tip: Make sure you're listed in major directories and on review sites (Clutch, Google Business, business directories). ChatGPT uses this third-party data to validate brands.
- Strategy: The more often you "appear" in neutral, high-quality sources in the right context, the more likely the AI is to suggest the company in an advertising response.
3. Structured Product & Service Data (JSON-LD)
ChatGPT often draws information from structured data to compare prices or features.
- Tip: Use extremely detailed schema markup for services and products. When ChatGPT runs an ad, the AI needs to know right away: "How much does it cost?", "Who is it for?", "What is the USP?"
