AI Visibility: What Companies Need to Know Now

How ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini/Google AI Overview determine whether your business gets found—and why this is essential to your business's success.

If your business doesn’t appear in the responses from ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overview, it’s invisible to potential customers. AI visibility is the factor that determines whether your business will play a role in the next purchasing decision.

Those who figure out where their company stands right now can take targeted action to correct the situation.

What AI Visibility Means and Why SEO Is the Foundation for It

SEO and GEO share the same goal: to be found. The difference lies in who makes the decision.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) refers to optimization for AI-powered systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews. These systems no longer provide a list of links; instead, they generate an answer directly. The AI system—not the user—decides which companies appear in the results. For companies without AI visibility, this means they are not taken into account.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which refers to optimizing a website for search engines like Google. The goal is to appear as high as possible in the organic search results for relevant search queries. Google evaluates various factors, such as page structure, loading speed, content quality, and backlinks. If you land on page 1, you get traffic. If you land on page 2, you get hardly any.

There is a third factor to consider: paid ads directly within the AI response. Google AI Mode Ads are still being rolled out in the DACH region. The launch is expected in Q3 2026.

Why SEO Is the Foundation for AI Visibility

GEO doesn’t work without SEO. AI systems primarily draw their sources from content that Google has already classified as relevant. If you’re not in the top 10 search results, AI systems are unlikely to cite you. SEO is therefore the foundation of all AI visibility.

By 2026, 68% of all Google searches in the U.S. will end without a single click on a website (Source: SparkToro / Similarweb, 2026). Visibility and traffic are becoming decoupled. A company can appear in an AI-generated response without anyone clicking on it.

Good to know

Here’s what has changed: In the past, 70% of searchers clicked on one of the first three linked search results—that is, they visited the websites and, in the best-case scenario, got in touch. Today, the majority of searchers find the answer to their question right in the AI response and only click on one of the linked sources if they already intend to make a purchase or if the AI response isn’t sufficient. This means that website traffic is decreasing, while the conversion rate is increasing.

How AI Systems Evaluate and Recommend Companies

AI visibility isn’t created by a single article, but rather by a consistent picture that AI systems piece together from multiple sources simultaneously.

The reason: AI systems do not use ranking lists. They break down a search query internally into several sub-queries and search multiple sources in parallel.

For B2B companies, this means:

AI systems use three factors to determine whether your company is mentioned in a response.

Structure

Each section of your website must present the most important information first (Answer First). Long introductions that don’t get to the point until after three sentences won’t be cited by AI systems. Likewise, each section must be understandable on its own, without the reader needing to know the rest of the page (Chunking). Clear headings, short paragraphs, and a logical answer structure increase the likelihood that your content will appear in an AI response.

Credibility

AI systems favor statements that can be substantiated. Content without numbers, sources, or a verifiable basis is rarely cited. To specifically boost credibility, author profiles that include names, job titles, and LinkedIn links, verified customer testimonials with concrete results and figures, and source citations directly within the body text are essential.

Google Ranking

AI systems primarily draw their sources from the top 10 Google search results. If you don’t appear there, you’re unlikely to be included in AI responses. AI visibility begins with Google already classifying your content as relevant. To specifically boost credibility, author profiles that include names, job titles, and LinkedIn links, substantiated client testimonials with concrete results and figures, and citations directly within the body text are essential.

These measures will tangibly increase your AI visibility

Websites specifically optimized for AI systems receive up to 40% more visibility in AI responses than comparable, non-optimized sites (Source: Princeton University, Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024). The goal is not to rebuild the entire website, but to format existing content in such a way that AI systems classify it as citable.

The following measures show where companies can take concrete action:

1
FAQ Sections

Answer real user questions on every important page

2
Schema Markup

Implementing Structured Data on the Website

3
References

Include numbers and sources directly in the body of the text

4
Author Profiles

Enable Name, Position, and LinkedIn Links on Blog Posts

Google Business Profile

Keep all information up to date

Content Structure

Write each section so that it is understandable without context

Grounding Page

Structured company information in one place (services, references, and figures) that AI systems can use directly

SEO as a Foundation

Technical optimization, relevant keywords, and strong content determine whether AI systems use your website as a source.

AI Visibility in Practice

The measures are working. Our own data shows this.

LeadEngine is currently cited with specifically optimized keywords in AI overviews such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. We also track this trend using an AI monitoring tool and have observed a steady increase in mentions.

We’ve observed the same trend among clients for whom we’ve implemented the same GEO measures: a measurable increase in visibility within AI systems. Those who take the right steps appear in the AI response before the first click even happens.

Most companies aren’t aware of this. We analyze your AI visibility and show you where you stand and what needs to change.

FAQ: AI Visibility for Businesses

Do I have to completely rebuild my website?

No. In most cases, it’s enough to better organize existing content, include citations, and add FAQ sections.

Through regular monitoring and reporting on the AI visibility strategies being used, initial changes can be quickly identified and addressed in a targeted manner.

ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude are the most widely used AI assistants worldwide. ChatGPT holds a 46.4% market share, followed by Gemini with 27.7% and Claude with 10.3% (Source: Sensor Tower, State of AI 2026, via TechCrunch, June 2026). ChatGPT alone is used by 900 million people each week (Source: OpenAI, February 2026, via TechCrunch). Google AI Overviews is added as a separate category: The system already appears in 48% of all Google search queries and provides answers directly on the search results page.

The share of AI-powered searches is growing. Those who don’t invest in AI visibility now will leave this field to their competitors.
