Worldwide, Google AI Mode Ads already appear in 25.5% of all these AI responses, a +394% increase compared to early 2025 (Source: BrightEdge, March 2026; global data).
For the DACH region, the following applies: Ads appearing directly in AI Mode and AI Overview are currently being tested exclusively in the U.S. and a few other countries. For the DACH market, the launch is currently expected in Q4 2026.
Those who are prepared now have a clear advantage.
For anyone who doesn't know yet: What is Google AI Mode?
Google AI Mode is the next evolution of Google Search. Instead of a traditional list of links, Google answers search queries directly with an AI-generated response, powered by Google’s AI model, Gemini. Users receive a complete answer without having to click on a website.
The entire search results page is replaced by an AI-driven conversation. Traditional search results are completely pushed into the background.
The implication for advertisers: If you don’t appear in the AI response, you simply won’t be seen.
What Does the New Ads Format Mean for Your Google Ads Budget?
According to an analysis by Conversion Traffic, German websites lose 265 million organic clicks each month due to AI Mode.
An analysis by Seer Interactive in the U.S. also shows that the click-through rate on paid ads drops from 13% to 6% as soon as AI-generated results appear.
Organic traffic is therefore declining. Paid ads are becoming more important. And Google AI Mode Ads are the format that will shape this trend in the long term.
Anyone who builds out their infrastructure now will have an advantage once ads in Google AI Mode are rolled out here as well.
How do Google AI Mode Ads work?
Unlike traditional search ads, Google AI Mode Ads do not appear above or below the search results. They are embedded directly within the AI-generated response. The user sees the ad as part of the response, not as a separate advertising element.
The technical details behind it:
- Google determines which ads are included in the AI response based on relevance and ad quality.
- A separate opt-in is not required.
- Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns are automatically included in AI Mode placements.
If you want to take it a step further, go with AI Max for Search:
This feature allows Google to match ads even more precisely to users’ actual questions and search queries.
The key factor here is the landing page. The better the content on the landing page matches users’ queries, the more relevant the ad is deemed to be, and the higher the chance it will appear in the AI response.
What are the three things advertisers should know right now about Google AI Mode Ads?
No separate reporting
Currently, there is no dedicated analysis showing which impressions and clicks come from AI Mode placements. Google has announced separate segment reporting, but no timeline has been provided (Source: Google Ads Help, Google Marketing Live 2026).
Quality matters more than budget
The AI determines which ads are displayed. Ad copy, assets, and landing page quality thus become decisive factors.
Performance Max Has the Edge
PMax campaigns are primarily used for AI Mode placements because they give Google the greatest flexibility in ad delivery.

What does this mean, specifically, for B2B advertisers in the DACH region?
B2B purchasing decisions are complex. They involve lengthy research phases, multiple decision-makers, and large capital investments.
It is precisely these mid-funnel searches—that is, search queries such as “best CRM solution for mechanical engineering” or “B2B lead generation providers”—that are covered by AI Mode or AI Overview. This is not a prediction, but a reality that can already be observed.
This fundamentally changes three things:
Visibility is no longer automatically achieved through a good ranking.
Anyone who ranks in position 1 but does not appear in the AI response will be overlooked. The CTR for position 1 in Germany has already dropped measurably due to AI Mode (Source: SISTRIX, 2026).
The first contact with the customer is being postponed.
It used to be the website. Today, it’s the AI response. If you’re not there, you’ll lose the first impression to the competition.
Paid and organic must be considered together.
SEO or SEA alone are no longer enough. If you want to be visible in Google AI Mode and, later, in Ads, you need both: relevant content that is cited as a source, and ads that are embedded in the AI response.
What Specifically Needs to Be Done Now
The rollout of Google AI Mode Ads in the DACH region is coming. There is no specific timeline. Nevertheless, preparations should begin now.
Five measures that are making a difference right now:
1. Optimize Performance Max campaigns.
PMax is primarily used for Google AI Mode ad placements. Asset quality determines which ads are displayed. Poor-quality assets mean no visibility.
2. Enable AI Max for Search.
The focus should be more on search term matching and less on asset optimization (Source: https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/15910187?hl=de).
3. Make ad copy AI-ready.
AI prefers clear, fact-based texts that offer concrete benefits. First and foremost, this means no marketing jargon or empty promises. What’s needed now are concrete statements with verifiable added value.
4. Set up GEO.
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization, which refers to the optimization of content for AI-generated search results. Those cited as sources in AI Mode benefit twice over: they gain more organic visibility and are better positioned for Google AI Mode Ads placements.
5. Integrate paid and organic channels.
